Afshan Khan – The Missing Peace – TEDxSMU 2013

Afshan Khan serves as President & CEO of Women for Women International (WfWI), where she sets the strategic vision, mobilizes resources to execute that vision, and leads innovations in WfWI’s work that enable women affected by war and conflict to transform their own lives, their families, and communities.  She is also the primary spokesperson for WfWI on the global stage, making the case for women’s empowerment to politicians, policymakers, opinion leaders, and the general public.

Previously, Afshan was the Director of UNICEF’s Public-Sector Alliances and Resource Mobilization Office (PARMO), the capstone of a 25-year career with the United Nations.  In this role, she led a team that was responsible for mobilizing over $10 billion for programs for children and families from governments and foundation partners.

In her career with UNICEF, Afshan worked in several conflict countries and also served as Deputy Director Emergency Operations.  As Associate Director for the Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office, she led the expansion of UNICEF’s public/private partnerships to leverage assets for improving development outcomes.

Afshan received her undergraduate degree in political science from McGill University and a Master’s in Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.  Afshan speaks English, French, Urdu, and Portuguese.
