Kyle Stewart – TEDxSMU 2012

Talks 1 Comment

An endlessly curious person who grew up in a small Iowa town, Kyle received degrees in music from Iowa State University, Northwestern University and Tanglewood. After stints teaching music, arts and humanities at Alverno College, technical writing, and managing International Sales and Marketing for BancTec, Kyle bought a coffee shop. He added tea to the product line and renamed the business The Cultured Cup. His fascination with world culture and social rituals led him to tea, the world’s second most consumed beverage after water. Seventeen years later, The Cultured Cup is considered one of the best places to buy and learn about tea in the US. As the first Texan to achieve the title of Certified Tea Specialist (CTS), Kyle serves as an advisory board member for the Specialty Tea Institute (STI), a division of the US Tea Association, and teaches for the STI Tea Certification Program.

I love the idea of the beauty of complexity in the simplicity. Like the bowl while so simple in function, it’s simply a device to hold an item in place, be it pasta, rice, tea, or even Genmaicha (brown rice tea). While simple in design, is complex in execution, the bowl contains the beauty, it gives it freely only to be filled again.
The design of Wabi-Sabi looks the same today as it did 5,000 years ago yet close examination of each bowl shows individuality and beauty in its imperfections that can’t be duplicated.
