TEDxChange Live from Berlin – 4.5.12
Convened by Melinda French Gates. Hosted by Chris Anderson.
Presented locally through a collaboration of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth & TEDxSMU.
The current economic climate has drawn our focus to immediate needs closest to home. But now, more than ever, it’s critical to keep site of the fact that we are part of an interdependent, global community. And too many within that community cannot meet their most basic needs: food, clean water, life-saving medical treatment and vaccines.
We can’t proceed with business as usual.
On April 5, 2012, we’ll take a step back and look at the big picture: Why should we, as a society, continue to invest in global health and development? How can we work across borders and political boundaries to make positive change? And what returns can we expect on our investments?
Please join TEDxSMU & the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth for a live simulcast of TEDxChange, followed by an optional lunch and response from UT Southwestern’s Dr. Fiemu Nwariaku. Dr. Nwariaku is UTSW’s associate dean for global health and oversees the Office for Global Health to direct and develop training and research initiatives with partners around the world.

Confirmed TEDxChange Speakers
- Jeff Chapin
Jeff Chapin is a mechanical engineer and product designer for IDEO. He specializes in designing sanitation solutions for the developing world and has conducted projects in both Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Jeff will challenge traditional perceptions of ‘design’ by emphasizing the importance of sustainable, market-based systems for developing societies. - Sven Giegold
Sven Giegold is a Member of the European Parliament and one of the founding members of Attac Germany. Sven has dedicated much of his career towards green industry issues. He will talk about the power of collective action and how the actions of individuals, communities, and progressive business can lead to critical changes at a national and international level. - Baaba Maal
Baaba Maal is a Senegalese singer and guitarist born in Podor, on the Senegal River. Baaba sings primarily in Pulaar and is the foremost promoter of the traditions of the Pulaar-speaking peoples. He has released several albums. In July 2003, Baaba was made a UNDP Youth Emissary. In March 2012 he visited Mauritania with Oxfam to call attention to the humanitarian need resulting from the food crisis in the Sahel. Also an Ambassador for Nelson Mandela’s 46664 campaign, he has become an increasingly vocal champion for the rights of women and girls. - Theo Sowa
Theo Sowa is an independent advisor and consultant, specialising in international social development with a particular emphasis on children’s rights and protection issues, especially in conflict situations. She is currently the Interim CEO of the African Women’s Development Fund, a pan African women’s grant making organisation. Born in Ghana, she has lived and worked in many countries in Africa, as well as the UK, Europe, and the USA. Her work includes advisory roles to African and other international women and children’s rights activists and leaders, plus policy development and advocacy with a variety of international agencies and organisations. - Melinda Gates
Melinda Gates serves as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She helps set the overall direction of the foundation, shaping strategies, reviewing results, and advocating for the foundation’s issues. Melinda will discuss family planning and how the power to plan changes the lives of women and their families and improves whole societies.

TEDxSMU Tuesdays – Fall Series

Join the TEDxSMU & SMU Innovation Gym teams for a weekly brown bag lunch series to watch a TEDTalk from the TED.com archives and have a lively discussion. The TEDTalk will change on a weekly basis, and all members of the SMU and Dallas communities are welcome.
Please feel free to bring a lunch with you, or you can buy lunch before the program starts at the Hughes-Trigg Student Center at 3140 Dyer.

We’ve had great submissions for audience talks at this year’s TEDxSMU. This is YOUR chance to vote on which talk will make the TEDxSMU main stage.
The top 12-15 submissions to give a 3-minute version of the Talk at our TEDxSMU Auditions. The audience will vote on their favorite, and the presenter with the most votes will be invited to the TEDxSMU main stage on December 3rd.

Nasher Sculpture Center Director Jeremy Strick and Melissa Chiu, Director, Asia Society Museum, discuss the current state of affairs in China as it relates to artistic freedom and expression, including the latest on the high-profile detainment and release of artist Ai Weiwei. TEDxSMU presents mind-stretching programs that connect thought leaders, solution seekers and the merely curious to “why not?” challenges.

TEDxSMU Live! TEDGlobal Simulcast – 7.13.11
TEDxLive is a new initiative to encourage communities around the world to organize events around the live webcast of an official TED Conference. TED will make the webcast of the entire second day of TEDGlobal 2011 (Wednesday, July 13) available to TEDx communities, and TEDxSMU will host a viewing party in partnership with Tech Wildcatters.
What is life? And how can it be better lived? From the secrets of the biological processes that take place in our body, to the cultural constructs that take place in our society; from the technologies and resources that make life possible and enjoyable, to the themes that define our humanity — or threaten it: TEDGlobal 2011 will be a celebration of life, in all its forms. TEDxSMU Happy Hour – 1.26.11

TEDxSMU Simulcast of TEDWomen – 12.7-8.10
TEDxSMU and The Hockaday School joined together to offer a live broadcast of the first TEDWomen Conference. This two-day conference took place December 7-8 in Washington, D.C. We hosted a simulcast of each of the sessions and invited members of the TEDxSMU and Hockaday communities to join us for one or several of the sessions.
TEDWomen will reveal: Who are the women leading change? What ideas are they championing? And how will they shape the future? TEDWomen will also reveal women and men in concert with one another, orchestrating different but complimentary approaches to ideas worth spreading.
TEDxSMU – 10.16.10
TEDxSMU, the fast-paced circus of ideas, is returning to Dallas on October 16 for its second annual conference. The 2010 theme is Starting Now: a look at issues around human survival, and how we move beyond merely surviving to creating vibrant, healthy communities.

TEDxKIDS – 10.15.10
TEDxKIDS @SMU, the first-ever TEDx event for students, is returning on October 15 at the Wyly Theatre. 350 middle school students and 60 high school juniors and seniors will participate in this free conference, and in exchange, will complete four hours of community service.

CoHabitat + TEDxSMU Host a Mobile Salon – 10.12.10
TED Salons have been held around the world as a means to nurture and continue conversations started at TED events and TEDx events throughout the year.
CoHabitat is partnering with TEDxSMU to host a Mobile Technology Salon. Our goal is to create TED-like atmosphere for an evening for thought leaders from the Dallas area to exchange ideas on the future of mobile; across all platforms, applications, and disciplines.

Dallas is flush with interesting ideas right now, and Idea Week is a way to highlight the array of projects, programs and initiatives related to spreading and sharing good ideas taking place all across the city. It’s “ideas a la carte.” Come to one event; come to many. There’s something here for everyone.
Idea Week is built around the same thought platform as its anchor event, TEDxSMU. Simply put and stealing from the TED Conferences, it’s about “ideas worth spreading.” It’s seven days of events that showcase some of Dallas’ best new ways of thinking.
